BMW Group Plant Munich has entered a new phase of transformation, officially launching production of the first near-series test vehicles for the new BMW i3. This milestone signals the start of the final preparation stage ahead of full series production, scheduled for the second half of 2026.
“For the first time, we have built a BMW i3 entirely at our plant — using cutting-edge manufacturing technology and digitally integrated processes,” said Peter Weber, Head of BMW Group Plant Munich.
“Producing pre-series vehicles is a crucial milestone for our facility. It enables us to fine-tune every process under real production conditions before full-scale manufacturing begins,” he added.
The newly installed production lines for the Neue Klasse models at the Munich plant have successfully completed all functional tests and are now operating in pre-series mode. These test vehicles are produced using the same equipment, workflows, and logistics systems planned for mass production. This phase is designed to optimize processes, validate quality standards, and ensure a seamless ramp-up.
The new BMW i3 will be the first sedan built at the Munich facility based on the Neue Klasse architecture. It follows the earlier rollout of the iX3 SUV at BMW’s Debrecen plant in Hungary.
The Neue Klasse platform delivers major advancements in efficiency, driving range, charging speed, and digital user experience. These improvements are powered by sixth-generation eDrive technology, newly developed high-voltage batteries with greater energy density, and an advanced 800-volt electrical system.
Meanwhile, Plant Munich continues production of the current 3 Series and 4 Series models — including combustion, plug-in hybrid, and electric variants — alongside preparations for the Neue Klasse transition. This dual-production strategy supports a smooth shift toward electrification while preserving operational flexibility.
Money: A Burden Or A Blessing?
The plant’s transformation has been ongoing for several years, backed by major investments in new body shops, paint facilities, assembly lines, and upgraded logistics systems tailored for electric vehicle production.
A full public unveiling of the production-spec BMW i3 — including detailed specifications, design highlights, and performance data — is expected later in 2026, ahead of or in tandem with the start of customer deliveries.
