Music icon Lauryn Hill added another historic milestone to her legendary career on Sunday night, becoming the inaugural recipient of BET’s newly created Living Legend Icon Award at the 2026 BET Awards, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
The Living Legend Icon Award was created to celebrate artists whose influence has transcended generations and left an enduring mark on music and culture. Hill became its first-ever recipient, recognized for her groundbreaking work as a singer, rapper, songwriter, and cultural trailblazer across hip-hop, R&B, soul, and reggae.
The night’s most emotional segment came in the form of a sprawling, roughly 20-minute tribute that spanned Hill’s entire catalogue. Her former Fugees bandmate Wyclef Jean narrated her career story, setting up a star-studded medley featuring SZA, Doechii, Nas, Doja Cat, Queen Latifah, Lizzo, Common, Rapsody, Tems, Tierra Whack, and Alexia Jayy, alongside a special appearance from The War and Treaty.
In one of the night’s most touching moments, Hill’s own children — Selah, YG, and Zion Marley — took the stage to perform songs tied to their mother’s legacy, paying tribute to both The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and her work with the Fugees.
The tribute reached its emotional peak when Hill herself surprised the audience by taking the stage to perform her classic “Ex-Factor,” earning a standing ovation from fans and fellow artists alike. She later closed out the entire ceremony with a rendition of “Everything Is Everything” as the credits rolled.

Hollywood and hip-hop legend Ice Cube presented Hill with the award, calling her one of the greatest voices in Black music history and praising her for reshaping hip-hop, R&B, and soul while inspiring generations of musicians worldwide.
In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Hill thanked her family, collaborators, and supporters, saying she has always created music from a place of love and purpose. She reflected on her parents’ influence, saying they loved, poured into, and protected her.
Hill encouraged the audience to embrace their unique gifts, telling them that everyone holds different talents — whether music, fashion, or simply consoling someone — and that no one should sell their gift short. She also noted that her son John celebrated his 23rd birthday the same night, and credited him for “giving permission” for the celebration to happen.
The Living Legend Icon Award joins an already remarkable list of accolades for Hill, whose 1998 debut album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill remains one of the most influential records in modern music history — and made her the first female hip-hop artist to earn a Diamond certification from the RIAA. Nearly three decades later, her influence continues to shape contemporary artists across multiple genres.
