Ahunna Eziakonwa, a Nigerian diplomat and development specialist, has officially taken up her position as the UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Africa. This represents a major turning point in her nearly three-decade career inside the UN system.
Eziakonwa was sworn in by UN Secretary-General António Guterres to assume leadership of the UN Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA), a role aimed at enhancing the organization’s interaction with Africa.
In June 2026, Eziakonwa was formally appointed by the UN to replace Cabo Verdean Cristina Duarte. On August 1, 2026, she started her employment.
Eziakonwa brings to the senior UN role a wealth of experience in development, humanitarian affairs, peacebuilding, and political engagement.
She worked for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) as Assistant Secretary-General, Assistant Administrator, and Director of the Regional Bureau for Africa prior to her current position. In that capacity, she managed UNDP assistance to 46 African nations pursuing the Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2063 of the African Union.
Eziakonwa has held a number of prominent posts around the continent since joining the UN system.
In Ethiopia, Uganda, and Lesotho, she held the positions of UN Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator, and UNDP Resident Representative. In these roles, she coordinated political engagement, development plans, and humanitarian responses.
Additionally, she oversaw humanitarian activities in fifteen African nations while serving as Chief of the Africa Section at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) in New York.
Her career has also included senior assignments in Liberia and Sierra Leone, as well as work at UN headquarters involving peacekeeping, political affairs and strategic communications relating to Africa.
In her new position, Eziakonwa is expected to play an important role in advancing Africa’s priorities within the UN system and strengthening cooperation between the United Nations, African Union and African member states.
Following her assumption of office, she held discussions with Secretary-General Guterres on strengthening cooperation between the UN and African Union and advancing Africa’s development agenda at the global level.
The discussions also touched on issues including global financial reforms, regional economic integration, development financing, and opportunities arising from the green and digital transitions. Eziakonwa has indicated that she intends to work closely with African countries, the African Union, UN agencies and other partners to amplify the continent’s voice internationally.
Her priorities include supporting efforts towards peace, sustainable development and greater opportunities for Africans.
A Strategic Role at the United Nations
The Office of the Special Adviser on Africa is responsible for helping coordinate UN support for Africa’s development, peace and security priorities.
Eziakonwa assumes the role at a time when African countries are pushing for greater representation and influence in global decision-making, including reforms to international financial institutions and the UN Security Council. Her extensive experience working across different parts of Africa and within multiple areas of the UN system is expected to be an important asset as she takes on the new assignment.

Eziakonwa holds a Master’s degree in International Affairs, specialising in African economic and political development, from Columbia University in New York. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in Pedagogy, English and Literary Studies from the University of Benin in Nigeria.
In addition to English and her native Igbo, she speaks fluent Yoruba and has a working knowledge of French. With nearly 30 years of experience in the UN system and extensive knowledge of Africa’s development and political landscape, Eziakonwa now takes on one of the organisation’s most prominent Africa-focused positions.
Her appointment represents a significant diplomatic milestone for Nigeria and places an experienced African voice at the centre of the UN’s efforts to support the continent’s development, peace and global influence.
