The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority’s Board of Commissioners voted unanimously, 6-0, on Friday, September 11, to begin the formal process of renaming Nashville International Airport after the country music icon, with both the city’s mayor and Tennessee’s governor backing the move. Parton, the “Queen of Country,” died on August 25 at age 80 following a brief battle with cancer, according to her publicist — a loss felt across the music world and beyond.
Governor Bill Lee, who first floated the idea shortly after Parton’s death, described the airport rename as a fitting way to greet visitors with the spirit of a woman whose life became inseparable from the state’s identity. He noted that Parton’s roots — from her mountain upbringing in East Tennessee to the world’s biggest stages — carried the same “Volunteer Spirit” the state hopes every traveler will feel upon arrival.

A final name has not yet been settled — the airport authority said in a statement that it is still working with the appropriate parties to determine exactly how Parton’s name and legacy will be woven into the airport’s identity.
