
There was a time when technological progress was measured in decades. Today, it can be measured in months.
Artificial intelligence has moved from being something discussed mainly by scientists, technology enthusiasts and futuristic thinkers to becoming part of everyday life. It writes emails, creates images, generates videos, analyses information, translates languages, assists doctors, supports businesses and increasingly performs tasks that once required years of human training.
The question is no longer whether artificial intelligence is coming. It is already here!. But perhaps the more important question is this: Are we moving too quickly?
The world appears to be caught in an extraordinary technological race. Companies are competing to build increasingly powerful AI systems, governments are scrambling to regulate them, schools are trying to understand how students should use them, and workers are wondering whether the skills they spent years developing will remain valuable.
Meanwhile, society is being asked to adapt almost overnight. Perhaps we need to pause—not to stop AI, but to make sure we know where we are going. Progress should not mean speed at all costs
Human beings have always admired speed. We celebrate faster internet, faster cars, faster computers and faster communication. AI has taken this obsession with speed to another level. A task that previously took several hours can now be completed in minutes.
A person who struggled to write can produce polished text almost instantly. Someone without graphic-design experience can create sophisticated images. A business owner can use AI to analyse information that would previously have required a specialist.
These are remarkable achievements. But speed can also create problems. When technology develops faster than society can understand its consequences, we risk adopting systems before establishing the rules, ethics and safeguards necessary to manage them. The fact that we can do something does not necessarily mean we should immediately do it.
What happens to human skills?
One of the biggest questions surrounding AI is what happens when machines become capable of doing more of the things humans traditionally learned to do. If AI can write, will people still learn how to write properly? If AI can create artwork, will young people still develop their artistic abilities?
If AI can solve mathematical problems, will students continue learning how to reason through difficult calculations?
If AI can provide answers to almost any question, will people still develop the patience to research, question and think deeply?
These are not arguments against technology. They are arguments for balance. There is a danger in allowing convenience to replace capability. A calculator did not make mathematics useless. GPS did not make geography irrelevant. Search engines did not eliminate the need for knowledge.
But AI is different in one important respect: it increasingly performs tasks that involve language, reasoning, creativity and decision-making—the very abilities that humans have traditionally considered uniquely their own. Another concern is employment
Businesses understandably want to become more efficient. If an AI system can perform a task faster and more cheaply, companies will have an incentive to use it. But behind every discussion about productivity are real people. A worker who spends years acquiring a particular skill may suddenly discover that software can perform part of that job.
The World Is Moving Too Fast: Are We Losing Ourselves?
This does not necessarily mean mass unemployment. History shows that technological revolutions can create entirely new industries and occupations. The problem is the transition. What happens to the person whose job disappears today when the new job requiring different skills may not exist for them tomorrow?
Governments, schools and businesses therefore have a responsibility to ensure that AI adoption is accompanied by serious investment in retraining and education. It is not enough to tell people to “learn AI.” We must give them the opportunity and resources to do so.
The danger of believing everything a machine says:
AI also creates another problem: trust.
Machines can produce information with astonishing confidence. Unfortunately, confidence is not the same thing as truth.
AI systems can make mistakes. They can misunderstand questions, reproduce biases, invent information and produce convincing but inaccurate answers. The danger becomes greater when people stop questioning the machine.
A society that accepts every AI-generated answer without verification could gradually lose one of its most important intellectual habits: scepticism. We should not become a generation that asks, “What did the AI say?” before asking, “Is it true?” Children may need protection from a technology adults barely understand
Perhaps nowhere is the debate more important than in education. Children growing up today will encounter AI from a very young age. They may never know a world without intelligent digital assistants.
That presents enormous opportunities. AI could provide personalised learning, help students overcome language barriers and give additional support to children who struggle in traditional classrooms.
But there are risks.
If children become dependent on AI to complete every assignment, they may learn how to submit answers without learning how to arrive at them. Education should not merely produce people who know how to obtain information. It should produce people who know how to think.
Teachers therefore should not be replaced by technology simply because technology is available. The teacher’s role may evolve, but human mentorship, encouragement, discipline, empathy and judgment remain difficult things to automate. We should not slow down innovation—we should slow down recklessness
There is an important distinction here. Calling for caution does not mean calling for the world to reject AI.
AI has enormous potential to improve lives. It could help doctors detect diseases earlier, assist scientists in developing medicines, improve agriculture, support people with disabilities, make businesses more efficient and provide educational opportunities to millions of people.
For developing countries such as Ghana, the technology could even help bridge some longstanding gaps in education, healthcare, agriculture and access to expertise.
The real question is therefore not “Should we stop AI?”
It is:
“How do we make sure AI develops at a pace that human institutions, laws and societies can responsibly manage?”
That is a different question. Ghana must not simply become a consumer of AI. For countries like Ghana, the AI revolution presents both an opportunity and a warning.
There is a temptation to import every new AI tool and celebrate its arrival without asking deeper questions about data, privacy, employment, education and national technological independence.

Ghana should not merely become a market for foreign AI products.
The country should be developing the people, institutions and infrastructure required to participate meaningfully in the AI economy. That means investing in digital education, computing infrastructure, research, local-language AI systems, cybersecurity and responsible innovation. It also means preparing workers whose jobs will inevitably change.
The future should not be something that happens to Ghanaians. Ghanaians should have a role in building it. Perhaps the world needs an AI pause button. Imagine if humanity had a giant pause button for AI. Would we use it?
Perhaps not to stop technological development completely, but simply to give ourselves enough time to ask difficult questions.
- Who should be responsible when an AI system causes harm?
- How should personal data be protected?
- What decisions should never be delegated entirely to machines?
- How do we prevent AI from deepening inequality?
- How should schools assess students in an age when machines can generate essays?
The future should remain human.
There is nothing wrong with wanting better technology.There is nothing wrong with wanting machines to make life easier. But convenience should never become our only measure of progress. The greatest achievement of AI should not be that humans eventually have nothing left to do. It should be that humans have more time and ability to do the things that matter most.
We should therefore resist both extremes—the fear that AI will destroy humanity and the blind excitement that every new AI development must automatically be embraced.
Perhaps the wisest approach lies somewhere between the two. We do not necessarily need to stop the AI race. We simply need to learn how to run it responsibly. Technology can move fast. Human wisdom, however, sometimes needs time.
And perhaps, in the age of artificial intelligence, slowing down just enough to think may be the smartest thing humans can do.
