NPP parliamentary aspirant Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah has disclosed that several people in the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency, including market women, taxi drivers and artisans, have been encouraging him to contest the parliamentary election as an independent candidate.
According to Okatakyie, the calls are largely motivated by concerns over what he described as his treatment by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking in an interview with Nana Romeo on Okay FM on Thursday, September 17, he said he understands why some residents are asking him to abandon the NPP and run independently.
“I hear many people, including market women, taxi drivers, artisans and others, asking me to go independent because of what the NPP is doing to me,” Okatakyie said.
He, however, stressed that he has no immediate intention of making such a move, insisting that he will determine his political path based on his own assessment of the situation.
“I understand their genuine concern, but I am a good General on the battlefront, and so I will not allow external events and decisions taken by anybody, be it NEC or Nana Kwasi Boadu, to intimidate me,” he stated.
Okatakyie said he intends to remain focused on his existing strategy rather than allow developments within the party to force him into making a decision prematurely.
“I will stick to my plan and strategy. The only time I will go as an independent will be when I myself have decided to go, looking at all the dynamics,” he added.
He also appeared to send a strong message to Nana Kwasi Boadu, whom he has identified as a key political rival in the constituency.
“I want to tell Nana Kwasi Boadu that I have crossed the Rubicon, and it is a point of no return,” Okatakyie declared.
His comments come as tensions surrounding the NPP’s internal political contest in Afigya Sekyere East continue to attract attention.
