African Journalists And Editors Can Now Apply For MTN’s Pan-African Media Innovation Programme

Africa’s media landscape is changing faster than most newsrooms can keep up. MTN Group, the University of Johannesburg, and the African Editors Forum want to change that — one journalist at a time.

Applications are now open for the 2026 cohort of the MTN Pan-African Media Innovation Programme (MIP), a continent-wide initiative designed to equip mid- to senior-level media professionals with the skills, networks, and strategic thinking needed to lead African journalism through its next chapter. The deadline to apply is 30 April 2026.

The MIP did not begin as a pan-African vision. It started as a national initiative in Nigeria — a programme that proved its worth before being scaled to something far more ambitious. In September 2025, MTN Group formally launched the expanded continental version at its Johannesburg headquarters, bringing together the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the African Editors Forum (TAEF) as institutional partners. The message was clear: what worked in one market could strengthen an entire continent.

What the Programme Offers:

The 2026 MIP is structured as a 12-week certified learning journey delivered across six months, blending online academic modules with an in-person immersion experience in Johannesburg. The curriculum is built around the real pressures facing contemporary journalism — digital transformation, media sustainability, ethics and law, newsroom innovation, and the growing influence of platforms and emerging technologies on how information moves across the continent.

Fellows will go beyond the classroom. Newsroom immersions, industry masterclasses, study visits, and structured peer engagement are woven into the programme to ensure that academic learning translates directly into practical capability.

Equally important is what the programme builds beyond formal instruction — a Pan-African community of practice that outlasts the six months, enabling journalists, editors, and media leaders from across MTN’s markets to collaborate, exchange ideas, and learn from one another long after the cohort ends.

Who Should Apply:

The programme is open to mid- to senior-level journalists, editors, and media practitioners from MTN markets who bring strong professional experience, a demonstrated commitment to ethical journalism, and a genuine interest in innovation and cross-border engagement.

Shortlisting will be conducted independently by UJ and TAEF, assessed on professional merit, potential impact, and each applicant’s commitment to the evolution of African media.

The voices behind the programme speak to its stakes. MTN Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer Nompilo Morafo frames a resilient, innovative media ecosystem not as a cultural nicety but as a necessity for Africa’s broader progress. Professor Sifiso Mnisi, UJ’s Director for the Centre for Data and Digital Communications, puts it plainly: the future of African journalism depends on continuous investment in critical thinking, ethical leadership, and newsroom innovation.

“Our partnership with MTN and TAEF,” Professor Mnisi noted, “allows us to equip media professionals with the academic grounding and practical exposure needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving information environment.”

For journalists ready to lead rather than simply adapt, the MTN Pan-African MIP is making its case as the most consequential professional development opportunity in African media this year. The window to apply closes on 30 April 2026 — and it will not reopen until the next cohort.
