Game Of Thrones Movie In Development at Warner Bros: Aegon’s Conquest Heads To The Big Screen

A Game of Thrones film is officially heading to cinemas, with Warner Bros. developing a sweeping prequel set in the world of Westeros.

Screenwriter Beau Willimon has been tapped to pen the script, drawing from George R. R. Martin’s epic fantasy saga.

According to industry reports, the project is envisioned as a “Dune-sized” cinematic spectacle centered on King Aegon Targaryen’s legendary conquest of Westeros — the campaign that united six of the Seven Kingdoms nearly 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

At the same time, HBO is developing a separate television adaptation inspired by the same historic storyline.

As Martin continues work on The Winds of Winter, the long-anticipated sixth installment in his A Song of Ice and Fire series, studios have raced to expand the franchise on screen. The latest success, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, earned critical acclaim, with praise suggesting it has helped revive the franchise’s momentum. Meanwhile, season three of House of the Dragon is scheduled to premiere in June.

Warner Bros’ announcement arrives during a period of transition for the studio, following its reported $110 billion acquisition deal involving Paramount Skydance. The company’s CEO, David Ellison, described the merger as a move that would “honor the legacy of two iconic companies” while building a next-generation entertainment powerhouse.

However, the deal has drawn criticism from prominent voices, including U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, who labeled it “an antitrust disaster” that could limit consumer choice.

Elsewhere in the franchise, earlier plans for a Jon Snow spinoff series starring Kit Harington were ultimately shelved. Harington revealed in 2024 that the project was “firmly off the shelf,” explaining that the creative team struggled to find the right story to pursue. Martin also previously shared that an animated series titled Nine Voyages was in development, though updates on that project remain scarce.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has proven to be a ratings triumph, drawing 9.5 million viewers for its season finale last month. The series has already secured a second season, with filming currently underway in Belfast and Spain.
Beyond film and television, the franchise’s expansion continues on stage.

A long-awaited Game of Thrones theatrical production is set to debut this summer, produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon — further cementing Westeros as a dominant force across global entertainment platforms.
