‘Ghanaian Movies Were Better Than Nigerian Films’ – Ola Michael Explains Why Ghana Lost Its Edge

Ghana appears to acknowledge that Nigeria’s film industry is growing at the country’s expense. After years of struggling, the Nigerian film industry has finally awakened, whereas Ghana’s industry continued to “suffer”.

A few days ago, Kwadwo Nkansah Lil Win, a Ghanaian actor and filmmaker, brought in several leading actors from Nigeria to help with his next project, “A Journey To Africa.”

This has sparked a lot of discussion on why Lil Win chose to cast these outstanding Nigerian actors for his movie instead of a plethora of outstanding Ghanaian actors. Kwadwo Nkansah Lil Win says he actually has a reason.

Ola Michael, an entertainment commentator and host of ‘Entertainment Ghana on Neat FM, has blamed the deterioration of Ghana’s film industry on what he terms “poor and inefficient legislation controlling the sector” in light of all these conversations.

He claims that Nigeria’s film industry is supported by stricter and more robust laws, which provide a more structured environment for filmmakers and the creative sector to flourish.

According to Ola Michael, Ghana’s film industry has lagged behind other nations, especially Nollywood, since the structures and legislation needed to safeguard and promote indigenous filmmaking have not been reinforced.

He claimed that although Ghanaian films used to be significantly more popular and of higher quality than those made in Nigeria, things have drastically altered over time.

Ola Michael emphasized that Ghana’s film industry has fallen far behind, saying,

“Until we reform our laws, we will remain struggling.”

He went on to say that the Nigerian film industry has advanced significantly as a result of a more robust institutional and legal framework.

If Ghana wishes to revitalize its once-thriving film industry and successfully compete on the global stage, Ola Michael thinks the government must immediately evaluate and reform its laws controlling the creative sector.

In the meantime, he believes Ghanaian actors are equally talented, and went ahead to criticize Kwadwo Nkansah Lil Win for certain remarks he made about Ghanaian actors after importing the Nigerian actors for his film.
