Anthony Joshua Reunites with Tyson Fury’s Ex-Coach Davison Ahead Of The Epic Bout

After more than a decade of false starts and fiery rhetoric, the fight is finally on. Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury will meet at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on Friday, December 11, in an all-British heavyweight showdown that will stream live on Netflix. Now Joshua has made a move that has already set the build-up alight. He has brought Ben Davison back into his corner.

A Trainer Who Knows Both Men

Few people in boxing know the two heavyweights as well as Davison. He was the coach who guided Fury back from a long layoff in 2018, during an unbeaten run that included the thrilling draw with Deontay Wilder.

His stable has since produced rising names such as Fabio Wardley and Moses Itauma. Joshua also worked with him in the past, before the 2024 loss to Daniel Dubois ended that partnership.

This time Davison will stand opposite his old fighter for the first time, with a rare view of both men’s strengths and weaknesses. That has not gone down well with the Gypsy King, who has reportedly branded his former trainer a “traitor.”

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn rejects the idea that this is a stunt to exploit Davison’s inside knowledge of Fury. Speaking on Sky Sports News, Hearn said Joshua has kept in regular contact with Davison, even while trying other coaching set-ups.

In Hearn’s telling, Davison’s familiarity with Fury is a bonus, not the reason for the reunion. Joshua simply sees Davison as the right tactical mind for the biggest night of his career, even as he continues to draw ideas from Oleksandr Usyk’s camp.

One Punch, One Plan

Hearn insists this is no reinvention. Joshua is not rebuilding his style at this stage of his career. He is refining it, sharpening the small details, and the mission is simple: land a clean, devastating right hand on Fury’s jaw and end the night early.

Joshua and Davison intend to plan that sequence together, one round and one exchange at a time.

Both men arrive with something to prove. Joshua survived two first-round knockdowns before stopping Kristian Prenga in July. Fury returned from retirement this year with wins over Arslanbek Makhmudov and Mariusz Wach.

With the pair arguably past their peak, December 11 is a chance to settle a debate British boxing has had for years.
