Steering Clear Of The Spotlight: Anthony Baffoe Reaffirms He Has No Eye On The GFA Presidency

Anthony Baffoe insists his position remains unchanged

While speculation routinely swirls around who should lead the future of Ghanaian football, former Black Stars captain Anthony Baffoe remains steadfast: he is in no rush to pursue the top seat at the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

In a candid conversation with veteran sports journalist Michael Oti Adjei, the former international defender put to rest ongoing rumors, clarifying that his current focus lies far away from the GFA presidency.

“Nothing Drives Me to the Seat Right Now”

Addressing the persistent whispers linking him to football’s highest administrative office in Ghana, Baffoe made it clear that while he respects the nature of time and changing circumstances, his current trajectory does not include a bid for governance.

“I don’t know what will happen in the next 6 months, 1 year or more, but for now, there is nothing that drives me to stand for the GFA presidency,” Baffoe stated.

Although his words leave a subtle door open for whatever the distant future might hold, his immediate message is unambiguous: he has zero intention or motivation to throw his hat into the political ring anytime soon.

It is easy to see why Baffoe’s name continually resurfaces whenever discussions about GFA leadership arise. Beyond his distinguished playing career wearing the national colors, Baffoe has carved out an exceptional legacy off the pitch as one of Africa’s most accomplished football executives.

Baffoe has served in high-profile managerial and operational roles with both the Confederation of African Football (CAF)—including serving as Deputy General Secretary—and FIFA.

As the founder and President of the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG), he has long been a staunch advocate for player rights, development, and structural reform.

His track record in tournament organization, governance, and international sports diplomacy makes him one of the few Ghanaian figures with universal respect across global football circles.

Baffoe’s decision to distance himself from the GFA presidency comes at a crucial juncture. Ghanaian football administration remains a topic of intense national debate, with fans, analysts, and stakeholders constantly searching for visionary leadership capable of elevating local leagues and restoring the national teams to international prominence.

For many observers, a figure with Baffoe’s international stature and clean reputation represents an ideal candidate to modernize domestic governance. However, his reluctance to step into the fray highlights a broader reality: executive leadership in national associations often comes with intense political friction and complex factional dynamics that experienced global administrators may prefer to avoid.

For the time being, Anthony Baffoe appears completely content working on his own terms and contributing to the game outside the politically charged realm of the GFA hierarchy.

While Ghanaian football enthusiasts may continue to view him as a dream candidate for the presidency, Baffoe’s focus remains grounded in the present. Only time will tell if the right circumstances will ever align to tempt the former skipper back into domestic administration—but for now, the GFA presidency is off his radar.
