Spanish football woke up to heartbreaking news on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. CD Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel has died, just hours after a terrifying collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a Spanish second-division match. He was 30.
The incident happened on Monday at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López, in the closing moments of the clash between Tenerife and Andorra. A long ball was played towards the halfway line, and Owono came racing off his line to meet it. De Miguel was chasing the same ball, and the two collided heavily. The Tenerife striker fell to the turf and did not move.
Players from both sides immediately waved frantically for medics, and the mood inside the ground changed within seconds. Owono was shown a straight red card, though the result no longer mattered to anyone present.
Medical staff sprinted onto the pitch to treat De Miguel before taking him to the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Reports said De Miguel suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest and had to be resuscitated during the emergency response. He was initially described as stable, despite the severity of his condition, which gave those following the story a glimmer of hope. His health then deteriorated.
At around 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Tenerife confirmed that he had died.
Clubs and Icons Pay Their Respects
In an emotional statement, Tenerife said the club was heartbroken and offered its deepest condolences to De Miguel’s family, friends, teammates and supporters. It also acknowledged the flood of sympathy it had received since the incident.

FC Andorra sent its own message of condolence to the bereaved family and everyone connected to Tenerife.
The tributes reached well beyond the second division. Barcelona and Real Madrid, two fierce rivals who rarely share a message, both honoured the late forward, and former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué added his condolences.
As a mark of respect, the Royal Spanish Football Federation postponed scheduled Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina fixtures.
De Miguel joined Tenerife in 2025 after spending his career with several Spanish clubs, including Castellón, Fuenlabrada, Unionistas de Salamanca and Leganés B.
His death is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly tragedy can strike in professional football, even in a moment that looks routine. His teammates, the supporters who watched him play and the wider football community will remember him.
