The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has left Kumasi for an official overseas tour spanning Poland and Canada, as Asanteman deepens its engagement with the international community and pursues new frontiers of partnership and development.

The royal visit, which commenced on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, was formally announced during an emergency sitting of the Asanteman Council at the Manhyia Palace earlier in the week. Otumfuo is expected to first touch down in Poland before continuing to Canada for a series of high-level engagements whose full details are yet to be made public.

While the complete itinerary remains undisclosed, the tour is expected to bring Otumfuo into contact with government officials, traditional leaders, academic institutions, development organisations, investors, and members of the Ghanaian diaspora. Discussions are anticipated to span cultural diplomacy, educational collaboration, investment opportunities, and broader developmental initiatives aimed at benefitting the Ashanti Region and Ghana as a whole.

The visit is consistent with Otumfuo’s long-established record as a statesman whose international engagements have repeatedly translated into tangible benefits for his people. Over the course of his reign, the Asantehene has earned global recognition for his contributions to peacebuilding, healthcare advocacy, education, and the preservation of Asante cultural heritage — making his foreign missions as much about legacy-building as they are about deal-making.

Mamponghene Steps In During Absence

In keeping with Asante traditional governance protocols, interim leadership arrangements have been activated. The Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, will oversee the affairs of Asanteman in Otumfuo’s absence, while Nana Boadakye Yaw Ababio has been tasked with supervising administrative matters in Kumasi.

The announcement of the trip has been warmly received across Ghana and within diaspora communities, who view the mission as yet another opportunity to project Ghanaian culture on the world stage and cement the Asantehene’s standing as one of Africa’s most consequential traditional rulers.
