Ghana To Host The 2027 U-20 AFCON— CAF Confirms

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has chosen Ghana to host the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, 1marking the return of the junior competition to the nation for the first time in almost thirty years.

According to CAF, all of the top players on the continent will battle for a single trophy in Ghana during the event, which is set for February and March of 2027.

Given that the tournament will take place on Ghana’s 70th anniversary of independence, the hosting rights mark a significant turning point for Ghanaian football.

In 1999, Ghana hosted the U-20 AFCON, which the Black Satellites went on to win at home. The 2027 edition will therefore give Ghana another opportunity to showcase its youth football talent before home supporters.

The U-20 AFCON is one of Africa’s most important youth football competitions, bringing together the continent’s leading young players.

The 2027 tournament will feature 12 teams, with the competition also serving as an important pathway to the FIFA U-20 World Cup. The top four teams will earn qualification to represent Africa at the global tournament.

Ghana has a particularly strong history in the competition and has won the U-20 AFCON four times. The country’s youth football has also produced internationally recognised players including Stephen Appiah, Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari, André Ayew and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku.

Ghana also made history in 2009 by becoming the first African country to win the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Meanwhile, CAF is yet to reveal the details of the tournament including dates, host cities and venues for the 2027 U-20 AFCON.
