Ghana’s Marine Police have intercepted a wooden canoe laden with suspected cannabis at Ada, in an early-morning operation that has once again put the spotlight on the country’s porous inland waterways.
Acting on a tip-off, Marine Police personnel moved in on the canoe at around 12:41am on Thursday, September 17, 2026. As the patrol boat closed in, the occupants abandoned their vessel and dove into the water, disappearing into the darkness before officers could apprehend them.
With the canoe now unmanned, personnel towed it back to the Marine Police base for a full inspection.

What officers found inside confirmed their suspicions. The canoe was carrying 29 sacks, each packed with 70 slabs of compressed dried leaves believed to be cannabis sativa — a total of 2,030 slabs in all.
The seized exhibits have been handed over for forensic testing to confirm their exact composition.
Meanwhile, police say a manhunt is already underway for the suspects who fled the scene, and have promised to keep the public updated as the investigation progresses.
