India’s rise as an indispensable force in global travel reached a major milestone with the announcement that Delhi will host the 2027 World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Global Summit. Outperforming 22 other competing destinations in a rigorous selection process, the South Asian nation will gather the premier gathering of global CEOs, investors, and public officials to discuss the industry’s trajectory.
The announcement was made during the ongoing WTTC Summit in Malta, where Union Minister of Tourism and Culture, H.E. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, was honored with a WTTC Global Champion Award for his strategic leadership in expanding the nation’s tourism footprint.
The choice reflects an impressive economic surge. According to WTTC’s latest Economic Impact Research:
Economic Contribution: In 2025, travel and tourism generated US$263.6 billion for India’s economy—a 7.3% year-over-year increase.
Employment Surge: The industry currently sustains 46.2 million jobs, representing over 1 in every 10 positions nationwide.

Domestic Backbone: Local travel forms the bedrock of this success, with domestic tourists spending US$203 billion in 2025—accounting for 86% of all tourism expenditures.
The sector’s growth shows no signs of slowing down:
2026 Forecast: WTTC projects an 8.5% rise in economic output to US$286.1 billion, expanding the sector’s employment footprint to 48.1 million jobs.
10-Year Horizon: By 2036, the industry is forecasted to nearly double to US$527 billion.
Global Ranking: India is set to leap from the world’s 10th-largest travel and tourism market to 4th place overall by 2036.
Bringing the sector’s flagship event to Delhi highlights a fundamental shift in global tourism economics toward rapidly expanding emerging markets. While domestic travel remains India’s strongest pillar, foreign visitor spending presents an immense untapped frontier for future commercial expansion.
The 2027 event will serve as a premier matchmaking hub, enabling cross-border investors, aviation leaders, hospitality giants, and tech innovators to build strategic partnerships directly within India’s evolving transport, infrastructure, and destination networks.
