President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to reposition agriculture as one of the most attractive and rewarding sectors of Ghana’s economy, promising renewed investment, innovation, and youth-focused opportunities.
The president, who is seeking to strengthen Ghana’s agricultural base, emphasized that agriculture must move beyond subsistence farming to become a profitable, technology-driven industry capable of creating sustainable jobs.
According to him, the sector holds the key to reducing unemployment, stabilizing food prices, and boosting exports. Mr. Mahama noted that policies under his vision would prioritize:
- Increased access to affordable agricultural financing
- Expansion of irrigation systems to ensure year-round farming
- Mechanization support for smallholder farmers
- Improved storage and processing facilities to reduce post-harvest losses
- Stronger linkages between farmers and markets
He stressed that agriculture should be seen not as a last resort for the unemployed, but as a modern business venture capable of generating wealth.
