Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku has struck a defiant and hopeful tone in the aftermath of the Black Stars’ elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, calling on Ghanaians to stay united behind the national team as the country looks toward a new era of football development.
Ghana’s World Cup campaign ended on Friday after a narrow 1-0 loss to Colombia in the Round of 32 at Kansas City Stadium, closing out a run that saw the Black Stars post one win, one draw, and two losses across four matches — a hard-fought victory over Panama, a spirited draw with England, and defeats to Croatia and Colombia.
In a statement issued on the FA’s website, Okraku thanked Ghanaians at home and in the diaspora for rallying behind the team throughout the tournament, describing their support as a source of strength for the players even in the tournament’s toughest moments.
Okraku did not shy away from acknowledging the sting of the exit, but insisted the campaign carried real achievements worth celebrating. He noted that many had doubted Ghana’s chances heading into the tournament, yet the team defied expectations by advancing out of a difficult group to reach the knockout stage — Ghana’s first appearance in the World Cup knockout rounds since the historic 2010 run to the quarter-finals in South Africa.
“Our journey ended at the Round of 32 of the tournament, and as disappointing as this is for all of us, we are immensely proud of the team for the courage and passion they portrayed in representing the country,” he said.
Looking to the future, Okraku pledged the GFA’s dedication to shaping a more competitive, sustainable national side.
“The future of Ghana football remains bright. The Football Association is committed to building a stronger, deeper and balanced team that will return to the Africa Cup of Nations, challenge for continental glory, and reach even greater heights on the world stage,” he said.
Okraku also urged Ghanaians not to let the disappointment of the early exit erase the progress made during the tournament.
“Let us not use this moment to dwell on the disappointment of the team’s inability to advance to the next Round of the World Cup, but forge ahead with renewed determination and oneness of purpose to build a stronger team for the future,” he urged.
