A South Carolina man who was detained earlier this year on suspicion of sexually abusing minors has been sued by Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, for allegedly abusing the company’s Grok AI technology to produce content that depicts child sexual assault.
In the case, which was filed in a Texas federal court, xAI claimed that Terry Harwood had broken the company’s terms of service. This is one of the first cases that an AI business has filed against one of its customers for allegedly utilizing an AI system to create content that depicts child sexual assault.
Following increased international scrutiny of xAI due to claims that Grok has enabled users to create non-consensual sexualized deepfakes, or realistic-looking movies created by AI, the firm filed a lawsuit against Harwood. Harwood was detained in February, but his contact details were not readily available.
According to xAI’s complaint, the corporation “enforces its rules against violators by account suspensions, account terminations, and by reporting suspected child sexual abuse content to the National Center for Missing + Exploited Children.”

xAI said that Harwood attempted to use Grok to create sexually explicit deepfakes using non-sexual photos of adults and children. He allegedly produced non-consensual sexual pictures of adults, according to the lawsuit.
The business requested a court order prohibiting Harwood from using Grok indefinitely as well as an undisclosed sum of money in damages.
According to xAI, the defendant’s acts constituted a well-thought-out plan to use Plaintiff’s tool as a weapon for illegal purposes, putting Plaintiff at serious legal risk and causing genuine victims to suffer severe and long-lasting injury.
