Bawumia Pushes Modern Infrastructure and Technology for Ghana Sports Development

SWAG’s call on Dr Mahamudu Bawumia (4th from left) was to discuss Ghana sports development, modern infrastructure, grassroots sports and private sector investment

The executive leadership of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) recently convened with former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to outline a forward-looking strategy for transforming Ghana’s athletic ecosystem. The high-level dialogue centered on modernizing national sports infrastructure, expanding private capital, leveraging technology, and reinvigorating grassroots talent pipelines.

Modernization and Capital Investment

A major priority during the session was addressing the country’s facility deficit. To enable local athletes to perform on the global stage and position Ghana as a host for major international tournaments, the former Vice President underscored the need for state-of-the-art training grounds and well-maintained venues.

Achieving this level of infrastructure requires moving beyond sole reliance on public funds. Dr. Bawumia highlighted transparent governance and public-private partnerships (PPPs) as critical mechanisms to unlock sustainable private investment, ensuring professional administrative management and steady resource flow across all sporting disciplines.

Grassroots Pathways and Digital Integration

Beyond physical facilities, the discussion emphasized structured youth development. Dr. Bawumia identified school athletics and grassroots “colts” football as the foundational bedrock for long-term sporting success. Recommendations included:

Early Talent Scouting: Investing consistently in youth leagues, qualified coaching, and necessary equipment across schools nationwide.

Tech-Driven Performance: Integrating sports technology to enhance talent identification, analyze athletic performance, streamline sports management, and expand the digital reach of local competitions.

While Ghana boasts a rich legacy of international athletic achievements, both SWAG leaders and Dr. Bawumia acknowledged that individual talent alone is insufficient for lasting success. The strategic consensus centered on establishing clear athlete development pathways, long-term policy execution, and institutional accountability.

Ultimately, realizing this blueprint will depend on translating these high-level discussions into concrete policy frameworks, private sector engagements, and actionable programs on the ground.
