Backlash As NPP’s Amekplenu Says Party Deserves To Be ‘Worshipped’

Emmanuel Senyo Amekplenu

Senyo Amekplenu, a member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) communications team, has sparked controversy following remarks that the party deserves to be “elevated and worshipped” in recognition of its contributions to Ghana’s development.

Speaking on Joy Prime TV, Amekplenu made the case that the NPP’s record of policies and reforms has meaningfully shaped the country’s trajectory over the years, pointing to the party’s impact across governance, infrastructure, and economic initiatives as evidence of a lasting legacy.

In his view, such accomplishments warrant far greater public recognition and appreciation. Many observers interpreted his use of the word “worshipped” as rhetorical emphasis rather than a literal appeal — a deliberate turn of phrase designed to underscore just how highly he regards the party’s track record.

The comments, however, drew swift pushback. Critics argued that calling for a political party to be “worshipped” runs counter to the principles of democratic governance, where no political organisation should be placed beyond scrutiny or held in uncritical reverence. Supporters, on the other hand, maintained that Amekplenu was simply championing the NPP’s legacy and should not be taken out of context.

As one of Ghana’s two dominant political parties since the beginning of the Fourth Republic, the NPP has long occupied a central position in the country’s political landscape — making remarks about its standing, for better or worse, rarely short of contentious.
