‘Dragon’ Is A Character, Not My Real Life— Jeffrey Nortey

Jeffrey Nortey

Ghanaian actor, comedian, and spoken word artiste Jeffrey Nortey has addressed one of the more uncomfortable sides of internet fame — the moment audiences stop seeing a character and start believing they are watching the real person.

Speaking on Joy Prime, Nortey revealed that his popular “Dragon” character, along with several other comedic roles he portrays online, has led a significant number of viewers to conclude that he uses drugs in real life. The mannerisms, the speech patterns, the deliberately exaggerated behaviour that make the character compelling on screen — all of it, he says, has been taken at face value by people who have blurred the line between performance and reality.

Nortey was measured but direct in his response. The roles, he clarified, are entirely fictional — crafted for entertainment, not drawn from personal experience. He pushed back gently but firmly against the assumption that an actor must live what they perform, noting that the whole craft of acting lies in the ability to fully inhabit characters who bear no resemblance to the person behind them.

The “Dragon” persona, he explained, is a creative construction — a comedic character designed to generate laughter, not a window into his private life.

While Nortey expressed genuine appreciation for the audience love his content attracts, he acknowledged that certain assumptions cross a line from harmless misreading into territory that feels misleading and uncomfortable. Comedy, he stressed, is an art form deserving of the same interpretive respect given to any other creative discipline.

It is a reminder that holds beyond Nortey’s own situation. As Ghanaian content creators build larger and faster-moving online audiences, the gap between a performer’s art and their actual identity can collapse quickly — and the consequences, as Nortey’s experience shows, are not always flattering.
