Major General (Rtd.) William Ayamdo, a former Chief of Army Staff, has been appointed as Deputy National Security Coordinator in charge of Operations, following President John Dramani Mahama’s approval of a significant reorganization of Ghana’s National Security Council Secretariat.
On Tuesday, August 11, 2026, the President announced the modifications, which go into effect right away. The goal of the reorganization is to improve the nation’s national security architecture’s operational and administrative frameworks.
For the new role, Major General Ayamdo offers a wealth of military experience. From 2017 until his retirement in February 2020, he held the position of Chief of Army Staff, handing it over to Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah.
Under the guidance of the National Security Coordinator, Ayamdo will be in charge of managing activities within the National Security Council Secretariat in his new position.

Former Chief of Army Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, Major General (Rtd.) William Azure Ayamdo is a retired senior Ghanaian military officer. From 2017 to 2020, he served as the Chief of Army Staff.

He served in the military in a number of high-level command and leadership roles, such as Commandant of the Ghana Military Academy and Training School. In addition, he had expertise as an infantry commander and held high defense and intelligence-related positions.
In 2017, he was named Chief of Army Staff under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. In that role, he succeeded Major General Richard Opong-Peprah.
Ayamdo retired from the Ghanaian military in February 2020 after completing his tour of duty. He was then replaced as Chief of Army Staff by Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah.
Ayamdo’s return to a major national security position is noteworthy since he combines expertise in defense and intelligence operations with high-level military command experience.
Working under the National Security Coordinator, his new role as Deputy National Security Coordinator in charge of Operations is anticipated to concentrate on the operational aspect of Ghana’s national security architecture.
