New Patriotic Party Founding Stalwart Odoi-Sykes Dead

Samuel Arthur Odoi-Sykes

Samuel Arthur Odoi-Sykes, a founding pillar of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and one of the quiet architects of Ghana’s modern political story has passed on. The reports was confirmed Sylvester Tetteh on Asempa FM.

Odoi-Sykes held the party’s helm as National Chairman from 1998 to 2001, a stretch that ended in triumph when the NPP won the 2000 presidential and parliamentary elections and ended nearly two decades of NDC rule.

His political journey began well before that. In the Third Republic, he represented Ashiedu Keteke in Parliament from 1979 to 1981 and rose to become Minority Leader. Before taking up the NPP’s leadership, he was associated with the Popular Front Party, one of the groups from which the NPP’s tradition grew.

Beyond the party arena, Odoi-Sykes also served Ghana abroad. He was Deputy High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and later High Commissioner to Canada from 2001 to 2006.

His fingerprints on the NPP go back to its formative years. Records from the early Fourth Republic name him as the party’s chairman, working alongside Daniel Botwe, who served as secretary general.
