The creators behind ‘Game of Thrones’ are taking the franchise somewhere it has never been: movie theatres. Warner Bros. has officially set a cinematic release date for Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, the first feature film ever produced in the Westeros universe. The story reaches deep into the past, to the founding moment of the realm itself.
The film is set centuries before the events of the original HBO series and will dramatise one of the defining episodes in Westerosi history: Aegon Targaryen’s conquest of the Seven Kingdoms.
What sets this project apart is its format. Until now, the franchise has expanded exclusively through television, with House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms both built as small-screen spin-offs. Aegon’s Conquest is being developed as a proper theatrical feature, making it the first time the world of Westeros will be brought to cinema audiences.

As the title makes clear, the spotlight falls on Aegon I Targaryen, remembered as Aegon the Conqueror. Alongside his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, he launched an invasion of Westeros with the aim of uniting most of the continent under a single crown. The events unfold roughly 300 years before the story told in the original Game of Thrones and about a century before the Targaryen civil war depicted in House of the Dragon.
Casting has not yet been announced, so viewers will have to wait to learn who will step into the roles of the legendary conqueror and his queens. The film is scheduled to open in theatres on June 1, 2029.
Behind the camera, Owen Harris will take the director’s chair. He is no stranger to Westeros, having already directed episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The screenplay comes from Beau Willimon, the writer known for his work on House of Cards and Andor.
The movie also arrives amid a busy period for the franchise on television. House of the Dragon has been greenlit for a fourth and final season, expected in 2028, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to return for a second season, likely in 2027.
With a cinematic origin story on the horizon and two series still in the pipeline, Warner Bros. is clearly betting that audiences are far from finished with the world George R.R. Martin created.
