NFA Launches A New Initiative To Expand Screening Opportunities For Ghanaian Films

Kafui Danku, National Film Authority CEO

Ghanaian films are about to get a new route to the audience. The National Film Authority (NFA) is set to officially unveil the ‘Cinema Train Initiative’, a project built to win back the country’s moviegoers and give homegrown productions more places to be seen, both at home and abroad.

The launch takes place on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at 5:00 PM at the Accra Mall Food Court. Filmmakers, creatives and members of the public with a stake in the industry’s future are all expected to attend.

The NFA says the programme was shaped through consultation with key players in the sector, an effort to find practical ways of strengthening film exhibition and drawing audiences closer to Ghanaian stories.

At its heart, the initiative has two goals: persuading more Ghanaians to rediscover the cinema experience, and opening up fresh platforms where local films can be screened. That second aim addresses a long-standing problem.

The country has no shortage of talent or compelling stories, but getting films in front of wide audiences remains a hurdle for filmmakers trying to build lasting careers. By creating screening opportunities beyond the usual exhibition channels, the Cinema Train aims to ease that bottleneck and carry Ghanaian productions further across the country and past its borders.

The potential payoff is considerable. Directors, producers, actors and crew stand to gain visibility and new ways of engaging viewers. A healthier cinema culture could also deepen public appreciation for Ghanaian storytelling, boost the wider creative economy and build a stronger bond between filmmakers and the people who watch their work.

Still, the real test lies ahead. How far the initiative goes will depend on how well it is carried out, how many screening opportunities materialise, whether audiences turn up, and whether industry stakeholders stay committed.
