Solomon Owusu Reveals How He Persuaded People To Abandon NPP

Solomon Owusu

The United Party’s Communications Director, Solomon Owusu, has admitted that he personally helped persuade some people to walk away from the New Patriotic Party (NPP). This remarks, however are likely to stir fresh debate in Ghana’s political circles.

Owusu made the disclosure on Saturday, 31 October 2026, while speaking on JoyPrime’s ‘Insight’ programme. He said he had directly encouraged people to leave the NPP because, in his view, the party had nothing left that was worth their association.

He did not describe it as a one-off. According to Owusu, he succeeded in convincing quite a number of individuals to quit the party for that reason. He also argued that the NPP has lost its appeal to the wider public, claiming it is no longer attractive to the people outside its ranks.

The statement is likely to feed political conversation, particularly about the United Party’s efforts to draw supporters from other political traditions. For a senior party spokesman openly saying he has worked to pull people away from a rival is not the kind of remark that goes unnoticed.

The timing adds weight. The United Party is led by Alan Kyerematen, a former NPP stalwart, and it is working to establish itself as a credible alternative political force ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Seen in that light, Owusu’s admission reads as part of a wider push to present the party as a real option for Ghanaians who are disillusioned with the established parties. It also underlines the unusual fact that the party’s leader himself comes from the very tradition its spokesman is now criticising.

The remarks came during the 31 October edition of ‘Prime Insight’, which covered several other major national issues:

  • The restructuring of political parties
  • Illegal mining
  • The legal challenge over presidential tenure

Owusu’s comments on the NPP formed one part of that wide-ranging discussion.

Solomon Owusu has made it plain that the United Party is actively working to win people over from the NPP, and he insists the older party has lost its pull. With 2028 approaching, his words show how sharply the United Party is positioning itself as an alternative to the political establishment, and how heated the contest for supporters could become.
