Ecobank Group has marked a historic milestone in African banking and sustainable finance, with its leadership ringing the opening bell at the London Stock Exchange to celebrate the listing of its landmark $450 million Sustainable Agriculture & Natural Capital Bond.
The Market Open Ceremony brought together Ecobank Group Chairman Papa Madiaw Ndiaye, Group CEO Jeremy Awori, senior executives, partners, and key stakeholders, underscoring the significance of the achievement.
The bond carries the International Capital Market Association’s (ICMA) Nature Bond secondary designation — making it the first Nature Bond issued by a commercial bank anywhere in the world, and setting a new benchmark for sustainable finance on the African continent. It was priced earlier this year after drawing exceptionally strong investor demand, with a final orderbook exceeding $1.36 billion — nearly four times the original $350 million target.
That demand allowed Ecobank to upsize the transaction by $100 million and tighten pricing by 50 basis points. Moody’s awarded the deal its highest possible sustainability rating, SQS1 Excellent.
Ecobank Crowned The Best African Bank, Cementing Its Place At The Top Of Continental Banking
The bond is designed to mobilize capital for projects that protect nature while promoting economic growth, with proceeds channelled into sustainable agriculture, agri-processing, and water infrastructure across 24 of Ecobank’s African markets — with priority deployment in Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, and Ghana.
Funding will flow through agricultural value chains, including the production and processing of key commodities such as cocoa, coffee, and rice, alongside investment in water supply, sanitation, and irrigation infrastructure — strengthening climate resilience and improving livelihoods across the continent. Every eligible loan under the framework carries seven independently verified sustainability conditions, backed by deforestation screening and supply chain traceability requirements.
The listing highlights Ecobank’s commitment to advancing environmental sustainability while expanding access to financing for sectors vital to Africa’s long-term economic development. By pioneering this landmark bond, Ecobank reinforces its position as a leader in sustainable finance, opening new avenues for responsible investment and showing how African financial institutions can drive positive environmental and social impact.
