AAMFI Names New Chair As African Development Finance Alliance Expands

Dr. Corneille Karekezi

The Alliance of African Multilateral Financial Institutions (AAMFI) has appointed Dr. Corneille Karekezi as the new Chairperson of its Governing Council. He succeeds Samaila Zubairu, President and CEO of the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), who held the role since the Alliance’s founding in 2024.

The appointment was ratified at the Ninth AAMFI Governing Council Meeting on 14 February 2026, held on the sidelines of the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Dr. Karekezi, who serves as Group Managing Director and CEO of the African Reinsurance Corporation (Africa Re), takes the helm at a critical juncture — as African multilateral financial institutions intensify efforts to mobilize long-term capital, strengthen the continent’s financial architecture, and champion Africa-led solutions to development financing. His leadership will focus on advancing institutional coordination, closing financing gaps, and amplifying Africa’s voice in global financial reform, in line with Agenda 2063.

The Governing Council also confirmed two vice-chairpersons: Manuel Moses, CEO of the African Trade and Investment Development Insurance (ATIDI), as First Vice-Chairperson, and Thierno-Habib Hann, Managing Director and CEO of the Shelter Afrique Development Bank, as Second Vice-Chairperson.

The meeting marked a significant milestone with the formal admission of two new members — the Regional Maritime Development Bank (RMDB) and the Banque Ouest Africaine de Développement (BOAD) — expanding AAMFI’s regional footprint across maritime, infrastructure, trade, and development finance.

Reflecting on his tenure, outgoing Chair Samaila Zubairu said the past year had centred on job creation, industrial transformation, and inter-institutional collaboration, expressing confidence that Dr. Karekezi would deepen AAMFI’s impact. Dr. Karekezi, for his part, pledged to prioritize the mobilization of African capital and ensure that the continent’s development needs are met on its own terms.

AAMFI — also known as the Africa Club — is an alliance of African-owned and -controlled multilateral financial institutions established to promote collaboration and coordination in support of Africa’s sustainable economic development and integration goals.
