A Plus Demands Legal Action On Paternity Fraud After A New Survey Emerges

A Ghanaian lawmaker is calling for the criminalisation of paternity fraud, citing alarming DNA test results that suggest the problem is far more common than many Ghanaians may have assumed.

Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus and Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, made the call during an appearance on Joy FM’s Morning Show on Friday, March 27, 2026, arguing that Ghana urgently needs legislation that punishes women who deliberately misidentify the biological father of a child.

His push is backed by figures from a 2025 report by Blueprint DNA Organisation, which found that approximately 42.3% of paternity tests conducted in Ghana — roughly 4 in every 10 — ruled out the man being tested as the biological father.

For A Plus, those numbers are impossible to ignore.

“The issue has become serious,” he said, stressing that legal intervention is now necessary to shield men from what he described as significant emotional and financial harm.

The MP has previously signalled his intention to sponsor a private member’s bill in Parliament that would make paternity fraud a criminal offence, with sanctions for anyone who knowingly misleads a man about a child’s biological parentage.

He reiterated that position on Friday, framing the proposed law as both a deterrent and a form of justice for men who unknowingly invest years of love and resources into raising children who are not biologically theirs.

The proposal has not been without controversy. While some Ghanaians have welcomed the idea as a step toward honesty and accountability in family matters, others have raised pointed questions about enforceability — a challenge that could complicate the bill’s passage even if it is introduced.

Should the legislation clear Parliament, it would represent a landmark moment: Ghana’s first law specifically targeting paternity fraud.
