
Dr. Ellen Ohene-Afoakwa, FCIB, has been elected President of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (CIB) Ghana for a two-year term, following elections held at the Institute’s Sixth Annual General Meeting in Accra on Thursday, June 25, 2026.
A seasoned banking executive currently serving as Managing Executive for Corporate and Investment Banking at Absa Bank Ghana, Dr. Ohene-Afoakwa steps into the role with a clear focus on strengthening professionalism, ethics and continuous learning across Ghana’s banking sector. She previously served as a member of the CIB Ghana Governing Council, giving her firsthand familiarity with the Institute’s inner workings ahead of taking the helm.
In her acceptance address, Dr. Ohene-Afoakwa described the honour of being elected to lead the Institute, and outlined education, skills development and staff welfare as the priority pillars guiding her incoming council. She reaffirmed CIB Ghana’s core mandate — to promote the study of banking and regulate the practice of the profession — while pledging to champion professionalism, ethical conduct, continuous learning and innovation throughout her tenure.
She also committed to working closely with industry stakeholders to build capacity, boost the Institute’s visibility, enhance value for members, and mentor the next generation of Ghanaian banking professionals, while keeping CIB Ghana’s voice influential in shaping the future of the country’s financial sector.

Joining Dr. Ohene-Afoakwa in the Institute’s refreshed leadership is Woelinam Dogbe, FCIB, Deputy Director-General of Investment and Development at SSNIT, who was elected Vice President. The newly elected Governing Council also welcomes Rosemond Amoo, Doris Yaa Aggrey Ahiati and Daniel Arhin, among others, who will help steer the Institute’s affairs over the next two years.
With more than two decades of experience in banking, Dr. Ohene-Afoakwa has built a distinguished career in corporate and investment banking. Under her leadership at Absa Bank Ghana, the bank has earned several industry accolades for excellence in trade finance and cash management, cementing her standing as one of Ghana’s leading banking executives.
The new leadership takes charge at a strong moment for the Institute, which posted a 33 percent revenue surge to GH₵18.82 million on the back of rising examination registrations and a 36 percent jump in net surplus. Dr. Ohene-Afoakwa’s election is widely regarded as a significant milestone for Ghana’s banking sector, with expectations that her leadership will further advance professional standards, innovation and ethical banking practices across the industry.
