Sub-Saharan Africa, which makes up the great majority of Africa’s mobile money activity, processed almost $1.4 trillion in transaction value through mobile money accounts, according to the most latest comprehensive data (for the entire year 2025).
The GSMA State of the Industry Report on Mobile Money 2026, which includes data from 2025, is the main source of this figure.
In 2025, mobile money transactions worldwide surpassed $2 trillion, a substantial increase over previous years. “Africa alone” mainly refers to Sub-Saharan Africa, while North Africa has much smaller mobile money volumes. Depending on the metric, Sub-Saharan Africa typically handles ~65-76% of global volume/value, with East Africa (such as Kenya’s M-Pesa ecosystem) and West Africa as important drivers.
G-24 2026: Mobilising Finance For Sustainable And Inclusive Growth
This is not an all-time figure, but rather the annual transaction value (money transferred between accounts in 2025). A single global cumulative figure is rarely published by GSMA and other sources because it would be vast given years of growth.
As of July 2026, the most recent benchmark is the 2025 full-year figure; data for the first half of 2026 is not yet available in aggregate form.
P2P transfers, merchant payments, remittances, and interoperability are the main drivers of mobile money’s continued explosive expansion in Africa.
