In an attempt to make a significant impact on the major continental arena, Ghana’s senior women’s national football team, the Black Queens, will start their campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The Queens are aiming for a deep run and potential qualification to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and they are full of optimism. WAFCON 2026’s top four teams will automatically qualify for the World Cup.
The Black Queens will take on three formidable opponents in Group C:

🇬🇭 Ghana vs Mali — Thursday, August 6, 2026
The Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco, will host all of the group games.

Head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has already selected his team, which consists of a mix of seasoned players, pros from outside, and up-and-coming Ghanaian talent. Among the prominent figures anticipated to guide the team are Portia Boakye, the team’s captain, Evelyn Badu, and a few more seasoned players.
The Black Queens, who achieved a podium place in their previous WAFCON debut, are entering the competition with confidence. Ghana’s current goal is to surpass previous successes and contend for the championship.
Ghana will play WAFCON rookies Cape Verde in their first game before facing more seasoned teams Cameroon and Mali.
