Some NDC Appointees Have Forgotten Grassroots Supporters— Fiifi Kwetey

The executive leadership of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has publicly tackled the growing friction between high-ranking government appointees and the party’s rank-and-file members.

Addressing the issue during an appearance on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, NDC General Secretary Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey conceded that allegations of political appointees becoming distant after assuming state office are grounded in truth.

In the wake of the NDC’s success in the 2024 general elections, grassroots organizers who campaigned extensively have expressed frustration over encountering closed doors when trying to reach newly placed officials. Kwetey acknowledged these grievances directly, pointing out several factors shaping the current situation:

Diverse Backgrounds in Office: Not every appointee was recruited from traditional party cadres. Many were brought in specifically for specialized technical domain expertise required for governance.

Communication Breakdown: While certain officials may struggle to address complex requests effectively, others have actively avoided engaging with the base once in power.

The Demands of Public Administration: Balancing state responsibilities often limits the personal availability of top political figures.

To prevent bottlenecks and manage expectations, the General Secretary called on party loyalists to strictly utilize established organizational channels rather than bypassing protocols.

Kwetey stressed that direct access to senior ministers or the Presidency is neither practical nor intended for everyday operational issues. Instead, lower and mid-tier party organs are designed to resolve localized concerns, ensuring only high-priority or systemic matters reach the highest levels of state leadership.

Sustaining the Political Partnership

The debate highlights a classic challenge faced by ruling parties worldwide: preserving political harmony with loyal activists while steering the demanding machinery of national government.

Calling for mutual understanding, Kwetey urged party supporters to remain patient and persistent, reaffirming that a strong, respectful connection between state appointees and the grassroots remains vital to sustained political strength.
