‘Build A Banking Sector Strong Enough To Absorb Shocks’ – BoG Governor

Bank of Ghana Governor Dr Johnson Asiama has urged banks to strengthen risk management, improve governance and build resilience to protect Ghana’s banking sector gains

Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama has issued a stern advisory to the nation’s banking institutions, urging them to aggressively upgrade their risk management protocols, embrace eco-friendly and sustainable operational models, and bulletproof their institutional resilience.

Delivering his keynote address on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at the 43rd Annual General Meeting of the Ghana Association of Banks (GAB) in Accra—which also featured the debut of the sixth issue of the Ghana Bankers’ Voice Magazine—Dr. Asiama stressed that safeguarding recent financial victories requires unwavering operational discipline.

Acknowledging the remarkable strides made by the industry, the Governor highlighted key recovery milestones, including fortified capital buffers, enhanced systemic stability, and a notable drop in non-performing loans. However, he cautioned financial leaders against resting on their laurels, emphasizing that the current economic gains must be aggressively protected against potential macro-shocks and emerging global vulnerabilities.

Financial houses must maintain uncompromising internal governance to preserve consumer trust and safeguard their balance sheets.

Banks are expected to stay ahead of the curve by upgrading their internal security frameworks and adopting rigorous lending guidelines.

Dr. Asiama advocated for business blueprints tailored for long-term endurance rather than short-term gains, ensuring institutions can weather shifting economic climates.

Beyond risk mitigation, the central bank chief underscored that technological and operational innovation is non-negotiable for institutions striving to stay competitive and relevant to modern consumers and enterprises.

How Ghana’s Banks Could Unlock The Full Potential Of One Of West Africa’s Most Valuable Commodities

Because banks serve as the primary engine for mobilizing national savings, driving private sector investments, and dispensing vital credit, their strength directly dictates the pace of Ghana’s broader economic development.

“Our ambition should be to build a banking sector that is strong enough to absorb shocks, innovative enough to adapt to change, and capable of financing Ghana’s long-term economic transformation,” Dr. Asiama declared.

In his final address, the Governor reaffirmed the Bank of Ghana’s unwavering dedication to partnering hand-in-hand with industry players and key stakeholders. He noted that ongoing dialogue and shared vision between regulators and commercial banks will remain the bedrock of a robust, future-proof financial ecosystem capable of powering Ghana’s long-term prosperity.
