Ghana Opens Bidding For One Of Its Most Prized Assets

Damang Gold Mine

One of Ghana’s most storied gold mines is about to change hands — and this time, the state is firmly in the driver’s seat.

The Government of Ghana is set to reclaim the Damang Gold Mine as the current mining lease held by Gold Fields Limited approaches its expiration date of April 18, 2026. Under Ghana’s mining laws, when a lease expires, ownership of the asset reverts to the state — giving the government full authority to determine who operates the mine next.

In a significant policy signal, the government has opted against renewing Gold Fields’ lease. Instead, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, under the leadership of Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has announced a competitive bidding process to select a credible new investor and operator for the mine.
The decision is driven by more than just a change of hands.

The government has outlined a clear set of priorities for the transition: protecting the livelihoods of workers at the mine, ensuring uninterrupted gold production, and — perhaps most tellingly — promoting greater Ghanaian participation and ownership in the country’s mining sector. It is a statement of intent as much as it is a procurement exercise.

Several companies have already thrown their hats into the ring, with Engineers & Planners, BCM International, and Vortex Resources among those reported to have expressed interest in taking over the Western Region facility. Ghana’s mining regulator is currently assessing each bidder’s capacity to not only run the mine, but potentially breathe new life into its operations.

On April 18, Gold Fields will formally hand over the Damang Mine to the Ghanaian government. A transition team will oversee operations in the interim, keeping the mine running while the bidding process and approvals are concluded and a new lease is awarded.

For Ghana, it is more than a transaction — it is a reclamation.
