Broadcaster and political commentator Omanhene Kwabena Asante has called for a major shake-up within government, arguing that some ministers, Director-Generals and Chief Executive Officers of state-owned institutions who have failed to deliver should no longer remain in office.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, Omanhene Kwabena Asante expressed concern about the performance of some government appointees and questioned why officials who are not meeting expectations should continue to occupy their positions.
According to him, the time has come for the government to critically assess the performance of its appointees and take decisive action against those who are underperforming.
He believes government positions should not be treated as permanent appointments or rewards for political loyalty. Rather, individuals entrusted with public offices must demonstrate results, competence and a commitment to serving the interests of Ghanaians.
Omanhene Kwabena Asante’s comments come amid growing public discussions about the performance of government officials and the need for improved delivery across various sectors.
He argued that where a minister, Director-General or state CEO is unable to achieve the objectives set for their institution, there should be consequences.
In his view, retaining an underperforming official simply because of political considerations could undermine the effectiveness of government and ultimately deny citizens the quality of service they deserve.
The broadcaster therefore believes President John Dramani Mahama and his administration should not hesitate to replace officials who are failing to meet expectations.
The comments also highlight the broader question of how government appointees are assessed after taking office.
For Omanhene Kwabena Asante, political appointments should come with measurable responsibilities. Officials must be prepared to account for their stewardship and demonstrate tangible progress in the areas under their supervision.
He maintained that where an appointee has been given sufficient time and resources but continues to underperform, replacing that individual could provide an opportunity for a more capable person to take over.

His position reflects a broader argument that government must continuously evaluate its leadership team rather than waiting until the end of an administration before addressing poor performance.
Omanhene has previously used public platforms to scrutinise government officials and public institutions. In April 2026, for instance, he criticised the CEO of the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation over what he described as concerns surrounding the allocation and termination of mining concessions.
The latest call is likely to fuel further debate over whether government should undertake a comprehensive performance review of ministers, state CEOs and heads of public institutions.
For ordinary Ghanaians, the issue goes beyond political appointments. Citizens expect government institutions to function efficiently and deliver results, particularly in areas such as the economy, healthcare, education, infrastructure, employment and public services.
A change in leadership, however, would only be meaningful if it results in better performance. Replacing one official with another without addressing the underlying challenges could simply reproduce the same problems.
The real test, therefore, will be whether the government is willing to assess its appointees objectively and make difficult decisions where necessary.
Omanhene Kwabena Asante’s message is clear: public office should come with responsibility, performance and accountability, and officials who consistently fail to deliver should be prepared to make way for those who can.
