After a goalless draw at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Friday, August 28, Asante Kotoko FC defeated bitter rivals Accra Hearts of Oak 4-1 on penalties to win the 2026 Democracy Cup.
After ninety minutes of exciting football, the third edition of the parliamentary-backed showpiece match between Ghana’s two greatest clubs concluded without a goal.
Goalie Ibrahim Danlad then proved to be the Porcupine Warriors’ shootout hero, making two vital saves to guaranty victory and Kotoko’s second Democracy Cup triumph.
The official Man of the Match award went to Kotoko’s captain Musah Hamzata, despite Danlad’s important contribution from the spot. The tall center-back received GH¢10,000 for his exceptional defensive effort. The Democracy Cup 2026 Man of the Match trophy was later given to him.
Kotoko got out to a strong start and forced a number of early turns, but neither team was able to break the impasse. Throughout, both goalkeepers—Benjamin Asare for Hearts and Danlad for Kotoko—made crucial stops. The competition continued to be physically demanding and fiercely contested, with multiple bookings made.

The trophy was awarded from the penalty spot following a 90-minute goalless match:
Kotoko scored with a clever dink from Walid Fuseini.
Hearts’ equalizer was Ali Mohammed.
Kotoko’s advantage was recovered by Hilary Adabo.
Hearts’ Osei Asibey was unsuccessful.
It was 3-1 thanks to Tamuzi Aristote.
Hearts did not succeed with Amankwah Baafi.
Kotoko’s last kick was converted by Morofing Donzo to complete the 4-1 victory.
Musah Hamzata was named Man of the Match by the match authorities due to his dominant presence at the back for the whole game.
The victory also marked the first trophy for new Kotoko head coach Eric Tinkler. As champions, Asante Kotoko will represent Ghana in an invitational tournament in the United States (details to be confirmed).
The Democracy Cup forms part of activities marking 32 years of parliamentary democracy in Ghana.
