A New Democracy Hub Anti-Galamsey Protest In The Making

Ghana’s anti-illegal mining campaign could be heading for another major demonstration as Democracy Hub considers organising a fresh “Stop Galamsey” protest.

Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a leading figure associated with Democracy Hub, disclosed the development in a post on Facebook, stating that the group is currently deliberating on a protest that will be announced soon.

“Democracy Hub is deliberating on a soon to be announced Stop Galamsey Protest,” Barker-Vormawor stated, adding that further details would follow.

Although no date, venue or specific programme has yet been announced, the statement has already generated interest, particularly amid continued public concern over the impact of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, on Ghana’s environment and water bodies.

The proposed demonstration would add to Democracy Hub’s previous activism on issues of national importance. The group has been particularly vocal about illegal mining and has called for stronger action from authorities to protect Ghana’s rivers, forests and other natural resources.

Ghana Seems To Have Lost The Fight Against Galamsey

Galamsey remains one of Ghana’s most persistent environmental challenges. Illegal mining activities have been blamed for polluting major water bodies, destroying farmlands and degrading forest reserves. The issue has also attracted growing public pressure on successive governments to intensify enforcement and introduce more effective measures to combat illegal mining.
