Hamza Suhuyini, a member of the NDC Communications Team has expressed his opinions on the persistent claims of bribery and corruption affecting Ghana’s Parliament, contending that the problem cannot be resolved without critically examining the compensation of Members of Parliament (MPs).
Suhuyini stated in a Channel One interview that the financial circumstances in which MPs work should be included in the larger public discussion about how to stop suspected inducements and corruption in Parliament.
Regardless of the obligations and demands of parliamentary work, Suhuyini is dissatisfied with the pay given to MPs and questions why certain public workers receive higher compensation than Ghanaian MPs.
MPs Should Not Be Allowed To Serve As Ministers
Improving MP compensation, he claimed, may reduce the incentive for some lawmakers to pursue extra financial gains through “strange” means.
“If we want to deal with corruption and bribery allegations, we need to pay MPs well”, Suhuyini said.
Although increased compensation might not be sufficient to eradicate corruption on its own, Suhuyini thinks it could be a crucial component of a larger plan that also incorporates accountability, openness, stricter enforcement of parliamentary rules, and efficient oversight.
