It’s Time To Regulate How Gold Is Mined Or We Will Regret It – Erastus Asare Donkor

Erastus Asare Donkor

Erastus Asare Donkor has reiterated his demand for more supervision of Ghana’s gold mining industry, cautioning that improper control of mining operations could have dire repercussions for the nation.

On his Facebook post, the JoyNews environmental journalist wrote:

“We must regulate how gold is mined or we will regret it”

His warning coincides with ongoing worries about the effects of illicit and unregulated mining on the environment, especially the devastation of farmlands, forests, and waterways.

Mr. Asare Donkor has always promoted ethical and sustainable mining methods. He emphasized that responsible mining is essential to safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources in March 2026 and advocated for stricter oversight and implementation of current mining laws.

Additionally, his most recent remarks coincide with Ghana’s efforts to improve oversight of the mining sector. In July, the Cabinet approved proposed changes to the Minerals and Mining Act that would enhance regulatory monitoring, boost local involvement, and give mining communities more influence over the licensing process.

Additionally, the World Gold Council and the Ghanaian government have forged a strategic alliance to support ethical small-scale and artisanal gold mining, enhance traceability, and fortify the official gold supply chain.

But for Asare Donkor, the problem extends beyond earnings and gold production. His long-standing reportage on Galamsey has concentrated on the social and environmental effects of mining in the absence of appropriate restrictions.

He issued a warning in August 2026, claiming that miners were allegedly returning to previously cleaned regions and that Ghana was already relaxed on some of the progress gained in the fight against illegal mining.

Thus, his most recent statement serves as yet another caution that Ghana’s pursuit of the financial advantages of its gold riches must be accompanied by stringent regulations and ethical mining methods.
